Simmer the mixture, stirring frequently, until it thickens and deepens to a golden color. This should take about 5 minutes after the mixture comes to a boil.
Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the chopped pecans and sweetened flaked coconut. Set the topping aside while the cake finishes cooking.
Assembly:
When the cake comes out of the oven, poke it all over with the handle of a wooden spoon.
Gently spread the prepared topping evenly over the top of the cake.
Allow the cake to cool slightly before cutting it into delectable pieces and serving.
