3 tablespoons brown sugar

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and instant dry yeast. Stir until the yeast is dissolved, then add a tablespoon of sugar. Allow the mixture to rest for a few minutes until it becomes frothy and bubbly.

2. Prepare the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and granulated sugar. Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the egg and unsalted butter. Using your hands, gradually incorporate the wet ingredients into the dry mixture until a rough dough forms.

3. Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 10 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add additional flour, a little at a time, until it reaches the desired consistency. Shape the dough into a ball.

4. Let the Dough Rise
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, turning it to coat evenly with oil. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1 to 2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
